Exhibition Lʼhôtel particulier à Paris

Venue: Tchoban Foundation – Museum for Architectural Drawing
Address: Christinenstraße 18a, 10119 Berlin
Duration: 18th of October 2014 – 15th of February 2015

From the 18th of October 2014 the Tchoban Foundation will be showing 65 art works of Hôtel particulier buildings – prestigious town houses, which were built in the first part of the 18th century and characterize Parisian architecture until today.

The École’s collection is a treasure-trove of hand-drawn works, only rivaled in quantity and quality by the Louvre. The exquisite works on paper span a range from the Renaissance until today, presenting masters such as Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Rubens, Poussin and Bucher side by side.

The exhibited drawings are designs for L’Architecture françoise’s printing plates. The three volumes, published between 1727 and 1732 by Jean Mariette, were intended to impress all of Europe withFrance’s architectural excellence. Renowned Parisian businessman and publisher Jean Mariette commissioned young architects Jean Michel Chevotet and Pierre-Charles Prevotel to depict the buildings from various points of view. The drawings were executed to a precise and detailed standard, the better to convincingly depict the spirit, daring construction and decoration of each building.

Exhibition Lebbeus Woods, ON-line

Venue: Tchoban Foundation – Museum for Architectural Drawing
Address: Christinenstraße 18a, 10119 Berlin
Duration: 28th June – 3rd October 2014

The Museum for Architectural Drawing presents ‘Lebbeus Woods, ON-line’, an exhibition of the finest works of architectural theorist, draftsman, educator and architect Lebbeus Woods (1940–2012). Curated by Woods’ longtime friend and partner Christoph a. Kumpusch, the exhibition brings together a collection of  visionary works, such as  the intensely rendered architectural and urban environments produced in early years, that have never been exhibited before. These ink and pencil drawings cover a wide range of Woods’ research and re-imagination of cities both real and fictive and support Woods’ longstanding desire to show the capacity of architecture as a transformative and eloquent force.
By focusing on the diverse characteristics of his line work, the show demonstrates Woods’ complete investment in drawing as the most forceful, evocative and uniquely architectural mode of communication. Colour, tone, shade and shadow are deployed both in the service of clarity and the evocation of atmosphere. These works are forceful and fragile at the same time, imbued with the author’s singular language and conviction that drawings can say things words cannot.

A symposium in collaboration between the Tchoban Foundation and Aedes Network Campus Berlin will feature ‘Lebbeus Woods, ON-line’. It takes place at ANCB on the 28th June, 2014 at 4 pm right next to the Museum for Architectural Drawing, amongst the speakers are Hani Rashid, Kimberli Meyer, Dr Neil Spiller and Dr Christoph a. Kumpusch.

Exhibition Opening at the Tchoban Foundation

11.04.2014: New Acquisitions. Works on Paper 1967–2013

The Museum for Architectural Drawing continues the popularization of the architectural graphic art in a new exhibition exposing the latest acquisitions by the Tchoban Foundation.

The upcoming exhibition will be already the fourth exhibition at the Museum for Architectural Drawing since its opening in Mai 2013, following the successful expositions ‘Pirenesi’s Paestum’ and ‘Architecture in Cultural Strife’.

Founded in 2009, the Tchoban Foundation has already achieved a lot. Its founder Sergei Tchoban is a passionate draftsman himself and a collector of historic architectural drawings. His idea is to support architectural drawing as part of education for young architects.

The focus of the upcoming exhibition lies on the contemporary architectural drawings by renowned international architects made between 1967 and 2013. Included on show are works by Oskar Niemeyer, David Chipperfield, Zaha Hadid, Aldo Rossi and Gottfried Böhm, the only German architect awarded with the Pritzker Prize. Particularly remarkable are the large format drawings of the Japanese Atelier Bow-Wow from the BMW-Guggenheim Lab Project  in New York in 2011.

Alongside with drawings by the Western architects the exhibition will present selected works of paper architecture by Russian artists such as architectural fantasies by Artur Skizhali-Veis, architectural drawings by Alexander Brodski as well as architectural sketches by Oleg Kharchenko, the chief-architect of the Olympic facilities in Sochi. In addition to the recent acquisitions, the Tchoban Foundation is particularly pleased to present to the public a number of drawings which have been donated as gifts to the trust.

With this exhibition the curators present the new aquisations and once again promote the main idea of the Foundation – the support of the almost forgotten art of architectural drawing.
